Depart, Depart!
ByPublisher Description
When an unprecedented hurricane devastates the city of Houston, Noah Mishner finds shelter in the Dallas Mavericks’ basketball arena. Though he finds community among other queer refugees, Noah fears his trans and Jewish identities put him at risk with certain "capital-T" Texans. His fears take form when he starts seeing visions of his great- grandfather Abe, who fled Nazi Germany as a boy. As the climate crisis intensifies and conditions in the shelter deteriorate, Abe's ghost grows more powerful. Ultimately, Noah must decide whether he can trust his ancestor — and whether he's willing to sacrifice his identity and community in order to survive.

“I definitely loved this one. Shockingly real and brought in a lot of diversity while still adhering to sensitivity regarding the authors experience in comparison with others. Hearing about the Jewish perspectives of gender, and the ghosts, was very interesting and eye opening.
The situation was heartbreaking and written so well too. The way groups of people reacted was so real and raw. The climate change results were a bit too close to what could actually happen too, which was scary.
Great message, great story. The ending felt a bit forced I guess which is why no 5 star rating, but considering it was a novella, I wasn't too bothered.”
“The concept was interesting and after reading it, it wasnt what i expected. Meaning that there was not much supernatural elements in it and that it didnt make sense half of the time. I didnt get much from what Abe was suppose to be. Plus, the use of censorship for the homosexual slur was weird because the author uses the slur for transexuals uncensored.
Lastly, the main character was ok but he makes dumb desicions and conclusions such as leaving his friends to die in a flood, not being a responsible adult and saving money (seriously, the guy had $47 dollar to his name), and assuming that a cop was butch because of her appearance and the way the cop would deepen her voice without any confirmation.
Mayb im just ignorant of certain things that was going on but this book wasnt for me.”
