Decision at Doona

By Anne McCaffrey
Decision at Doona by Anne McCaffrey digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A fateful encounter between star-roving races by the author of the bestselling Dragonriders of Pern series!

After the first human contact with the Siwannese, that entire race committed mass suicide. So the Terran government made a law—no further contact would be allowed with sentient creatures anywhere in the galaxy. Therefore Doona could be colonized only if an official survey established that the planet was both habitable and uninhabited.

But Spaceship had made a mistake—Doona was inhabited. Now the colonists' choice was limited. Leave Doona and return to the teeming hell of an overpopulated Terra. Or kill the catlike Hrrubans. Or learn, for the first time in history, how to coexist with an alien race.

Decision at Doona Reviews

“Very oldfashioned in its treatment of gender particularly, but surprisingly radical reading as an understanding of the human condition. I was more interested in the insane drops of hidden lore- race amalgamation? A dystopian world that's strikingly similar to the one we're living in rn? Damn lmao charming in its insistence on a radical return to tradition, looking forward to the sequels if they transition to fullblown furry smut”
“Hmm... there's alot to unpack here. For a bit it actually confused me with the speakers outside of the planet, thinking that they sounded like Terran instead of Hrruban despite the character list at the beginning I just couldn't get my head around this primitive race sounding like that. Well obviously it all starts to make sense later and it's rather interesting why the Hrruban faked who they really were. It actually sounded like both races were in a similar position where they had exhausted their home planets and needed to almost start again. At times the plot focused too much on the animals of the planet though I liked the turn around for Todd. But boy was there just alot of interfering from organisations from Earth that all started to blur together. It's an interesting read though maybe best to read in a few big chunks instead of in smaller pieces so it flows better. It might of been better to see the Hrruban cat race as more intelligent than humans from the get go, as it would of been interesting to see how that played out.”
“re-read again 10/8/2013”
“Rereading this after having read most of Anne McCaffrey’s other first contact stories, I think this one might be my favorite or a very close second (the Mrdini from the Talent series being the main competition). It was especially fun to get the Hrruban POVs and see how they mirrored the humans in so many ways. It does feel a little dated with some of the gender roles and attitudes but not unbearably so, especially considering the poor situation the people came from and the healthy changes they’ll be enacting in future books.”
