“I enjoyed this way more than the first book. I’m glad that I decided to finish the series. It deals with a lot of the same concepts from the first with racism, sexism colorism, but also deals with family friendship, sacrifice, and revenge. I thought it was really well written, and it had a lot more emotion to it, and I like that it ended open.”
“This was a really interesting sequel to Dread Nation for a few reasons. Firstly, we now have dual POV with Jane and Katherine narrating interchangeably, which I really liked. It gave a different tone to the book and more insight into Katherine as a character. Secondly, the pacing - the first part of the book takes place immediately following where the first book left off, with similar plot lines to the first book. The second part of this book has a HUGE time skip (almost a year and a half). I will be honest, I much preferred the latter part of this book post time skip. The characters have all changed due to their experienced trauma, and it made for interesting developments in their characterizations. The plotline felt more varied in the second part as well, as Nicodemus felt similar to Summerland in its fall. Honestly, Jane as a bad ass amputee bounty hunter was truly impeccable to me. As with the first book, Katherine and Jane’s friendship continues to be goals. Altogether, the progression of the story and the ending felt fitting for the characters.”
