Queenstown, New Jersey, feels big when you need help and tiny when you want privacy. For Vandy Myrick, that’s both a blessing and a curse. Now that Vandy’s back in “Q-Town”, her services as her hometown’s only Black woman private investigator have earned her more celebrity—or notoriety—than she figured.
Keeping busy with work helps Vandy deal with the grief of losing her daughter, stitching the seams, cementing the gaps. The memories will always remain, and they come crashing back to the surface when her ex-husband, Phil Bolden, walks back into her life. Promising everything, returning home, restoring family. Until she answers her door to the news that Phil has been murdered. And Vandy decides Phil is now her client.
It’s hard to separate the Phil that Vandy knew with the one Queenstown did. She sees him—and their daughter—in Phil’s son, who attends a prestigious local high school. She sees the layers of a complicated marriage with his wife. She sees all of Phil’s various parent, husband, businessman, philanthropist. But which role got him killed?

“Not as strong as the first. Vandy is still a great character, a mix of strength and vulnerability. The side characters were still given their time to shine. The mystery itself, however, got a little muddy around the middle. The author did an amazing job, akin to Agatha Christie, of not letting the reader know who the killer was too soon. But, this also felt like a lack of clear direction, and when listening to the audiobook, I found my attention span shortening to the point where I had to 'rewind' certain parts over and over again.
The overall book was still solid though.
Thank you @macmillan.audio for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own. I leave this review voluntarily.”
“I'm a mystery book lover. Always like when I open the second and successive books and it's like being back with friends. The main protagonist has enough intelligence, emotional engagement and heartbreak to be engaging. With her Vandy Myrick mysteries Delia Pitts make me want to return and read the third book which isn't published yet!”
“3.75 out of 5 stars (rounded to 4)
Death of an Ex is a compelling and twist-filled continuation of the Vandy Myrick series. This time, the mystery gets personal—Vandy returns to her hometown only to find herself investigating a case that centers around her ex-husband. Delia Pitts crafts an intricate plot layered with secrets, tension, and strong emotional stakes. The audiobook narration adds depth to an already rich cast of diverse characters. While some plot threads take time to resolve, the story stays engaging and grounded in Vandy’s sharp instincts. A solid, satisfying entry in a promising PI series.
