A Slow-Motion Disaster

The water had withdrawn past her tidal pool and well beyond where the red sand was exposed even at the lowest of tides.

The utter silence with the ongoing background noise of waves left her ears and nerves wailing.

Even the tourists were quiet. 

Lina turned and scrambled out of her now-drained collection spot, trying not to slip on the mat of seaweed and clutching her pack in one hand. She waved the other over her head and yelled as loud as she could.

"Get to high ground, now! Call in your support scoot for emergency rescue!"

All the climbers who'd been so active and busy and noisy simply stared, either at her or the widening expanse of beach. Their confused eyes and faces scattered all over the cliff's surface might have been amusing if they weren't in danger they didn't seem to understand.

Running toward her own sky-scoot and wishing she dared change into the boots in her pack, Lina shouted again.

"Get away from the beach! Can't you see?"
