Publisher Description
Critically acclaimed author Denise Hamilton weaves an engrossing story of teenage friendship and adult betrayal, featuring a high-powered crisis consultant who gets swept up in murder and scandal involving a wealthy political family.
Maggie Silver is solidly middle class, with a mortgage to pay and an ill mother to support. She is doing her best to scramble up the ladder at an elite PR firm in Southern California whose clients include movie stars and famous athletes. Now, Maggie tackles her toughest client yet: Senator Henry Paxton, a distinguished statesman who also happens to be the father of Anabelle, Maggie’s estranged best friend from high school.
Senator Paxton’s young female aide has been found murdered, and Maggie must run damage control to prevent the scandal from growing. Thrown back into the Paxtons’ glamorous world, Maggie is unexpectedly flooded with memories from the stormy years in high school when her friendship with Anabelle was dramatically severed after a tragedy that neither of them has been able to forget. As Maggie gets further embroiled in the lives of the Paxtons, she realizes that the ties of her old friendship are stronger than she thinks.
Riveting and suspense-filled, Damage Control examines our craving for celebrity and spectacle, and how far the bonds of friendship can stretch before they break forever.

“Ever wonder who the people are that swoop in when celebrities, athletes, or political figures get into trouble? When laws are broken but someone doesn't want the whole truth to get out? That is Maggie Silver's job. She handles damage control in tight situations. The PR firm she works for decides how to spin statements to the press, wrangles the reporters, and puts the clients in the best light possible. This is what Maggie is called to do when Senator Paxton's aide is found murdered. Because of her past connection to the family, Maggie is in a unique position to get particularly close to the family. Unfortunately, Maggie's memories of her friendship with Annabelle Paxton aren't all sunshine and roses. There are events that took place in high school that both women would prefer remain buried.
The look inside the PR firm was most interesting. You definitely start to question the morals of people who can twist events and care only that they protect the person providing the paycheck. The fallout of damage control can be disastrous for the secondary players. The stress involved in that job is also tremendous. Throughout the story, Maggie deteriorates on a couple levels because of the strains put on her through her job. To add more intrigue, it appears that things aren't exactly on the up and up with the firm, and Maggie decides to do a little recon to figure out just what's going on. She takes on a bit more than she can handle as she struggles to keep her head above water. Add in a couple romantic interests, one who happens to be Senator Paxton's son and Maggie's longtime crush, and you've got a very busy girl!
I really felt like this book had a little bit of everything, and it appealed to me on many levels. I love a good mystery, and this one was filled with suspense. The political intrigue adds yet another dimension to the story. Throughout the novel, you can see the war happening within Maggie between doing her duty to her employer, and being a friend to Annabelle. Despite past events, Maggie really does care about Annabelle, and the bonds of that friendship are strained to the max. Maggie has to find her true center and figure out where her loyalties truly lie.
One of the really fun facets to the story is Maggie's obsession with perfume. Throughout the book, she explains why she picks certain fragrances for different situations, and is constantly on the quest for the perfect scent. It makes me want to start developing my own collection!
Denise Hamilton writes like a dream. Within the first three pages, I was completely hooked and drawn in by her style. I will admit that at time, Maggie seemed a little cold and distant, but I still enjoyed the character. The book is filled with little twists and misdirection that kept me guessing until the very end. Even after I read the last sentence, I wasn't completely sure I had figured it all out. That's not a bad thing, I promise! You just never quite know if certain people are good or bad. Damage Control has it all: mystery, suspense, political intrigue, and romance. It was an excellent book and I hope you'll check it out.I definitely can't wait to read more Denise Hamilton and already have one waiting to be read!”
