Daemon Voices

By Philip Pullman
Daemon Voices by Philip Pullman digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the internationally best-selling author of the His Dark Materials trilogy, a spellbinding journey into the secrets of his art--the narratives that have shaped his vision, his experience of writing, and the keys to mastering the art of storytelling.

One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling authors of our time now gives us a book that charts the history of his own enchantment with story--from his own books to those of Blake, Milton, Dickens, and the Brothers Grimm, among others--and delves into the role of story in education, religion, and science. At once personal and wide-ranging, Daemon Voices is both a revelation of the writing mind and the methods of a great contemporary master, and a fascinating exploration of storytelling itself.

“eh :) I think if you’re a big Pullman fan and use him as your source of literary inspiration, this book would be like the Bible. this is what I imagine Stephen King’s On Writing was to people who grew up loving His Dark Materials. definitely some great pieces of wisdom thrown in here for writers — and I think any book about storytelling is important for writers to read — but overall, kinda just felt like a slog of a university lecture on fictional theory.”
“I loved most of this to my bones. Pullman narrates the audiobook so you feel you are recieving his wisdom and advice directly sitting in two armchairs by the fire. His advice on storytelling and writing is invaluable. He's of the classical style and writes in the vein of fairy tales and fable & his insight is rivetting. He's also a complex creature, on one hand playful, compassionate, mythic and beyond the personal. Especially with his love of Blake and Milton. Yet he's also got the roots of a paired back style, love of the physical and of matter. I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. It would have been 5 stars. The only bit that got tedious for me is his repeated envangelisation about how god doesn't exist. I know it's his hobby horse, but I'm not sure it belongs in a book about writing. Pullman is a monist (there's only matter) but loves Blake's four fold vision and seems to assume the spirit is not matter, in a simplistic dualism. I wonder if the Heart Sutra would blow his mind in that form is emptiness and emptiness is form etc? So, its not whether I think god exists or not it's the strange paradox of the book that he argues for a tonne of things (like the benefit of reading for children - of course this is a good thing) which he states he can't prove but then keeps going on about how your can't prove god exists so we shouldn't believe. But all in all excellent about story telling and an insight into the complexity of Philip Pullman.”
