Crying in H Mart

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST

In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.

Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.

Loudly Crying Face“I did, in fact, save my tears until her mother died. Michelle narrated the book herself and her emotions behind certain chapters of her life took me on a journey. thank you Michelle for the courage to share your grief, vulnerability and culture with the world.”

Loudly Crying Face“I didn’t share as much of my thoughts in the moment as I originally planned to, but that was partially because I was so immersed in the book! I love how it reads like fiction, it is beautifully written. It made me want to hug my mom a little longer and make sure she knows how much I love her while she’s still here :)”

Loudly Crying Face“This book was heart breakingly beautiful. Michelle did such a great job narrating. Going in I did not know what the book was about, but I quickly realized how close to home this story would hit. I’m the same age she was at the beginning of the book and I going through a similar situation with my grandmother. I cried for Michelle and myself as well as the loved ones we’ve lost/we’re losing. This was a hard read but it helped me in some ways. I’m grateful.”

Loudly Crying Face“This was a beautiful memoir of Michelle’s culture and Mom. I love the Korean food references which shows that food really is a love language. This story shows the growth and pain a family suffers when dealing with cancer. It also shows how family oriented asians can be in comparison to other cultures. I’m giving this 4.5 stars because some parts of the book lost my attention. I do like that she narrated her own audiobook and I can feel the pain in her voice when she read certain chapters.”
