In this region of old farms and prehistoric caves, Sadie becomes entranced by a mysterious figure named Bruno Lacombe, a mentor to the young activists who believes that the path to emancipation is not revolt but a return to the ancient past. Just as Sadie is certain she’s the seductress and puppet master of those she surveils, Bruno is seducing her with his ingenious counter-histories, his artful laments, his own tragic story.

“I can tell this writer has a interesting style to her prose. But wading through 400 pages of navel gazing to experience a bit of it is torturous. I can see that she has talent, but this book is pure evidence. A slick glib protagonist (a spy) who doesn’t care about anyone or anything does not an engaging narrator make. Couple that with the fact that most Beckett plays have more going on than this SPY novel and you feel my pain.
The philosophizing is something. But who wants 400 pages of that?!

“Meh - I just didn’t like it and couldn’t get into it. Not really because of the very negative tone throughout the entire story, or the ‘all characters are shitty.’ But because it wasn’t really… engaging? Maybe it’s me… lol”cathrynann

“I was expecting the rising action to be a bit more plot driven, but the letters from Lacombe were so thought provoking I didn’t always notice the slow pace. Then, when the action picked up in the last 70 or so pages, it headed towards a satisfying conclusion.”az

Rachel Kushner is the author of the New York Times bestseller Creation Lake, her latest novel; The Hard Crowd, her acclaimed essay collection; and the internationally bestselling novels The Mars Room, The Flamethrowers, and Telex from Cuba, as well as a book of short stories, The Strange Case of Rachel K. She has won the Prix Médicis and been a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Folio Prize, and was twice a finalist for the Booker Prize and the National Book Award in Fiction.
