Corrupted Vessels

By Briar Ripley Page
Corrupted Vessels by Briar Ripley Page digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Human beings stand proud and alone upon the surface of this angel-haunted world, in this cosmos of wild experiment.

Ash and River are holy beings waiting for the end of the world-or maybe they're trans runaways squatting in an abandoned house. Linden is a college student, restless and unsatisfied in their relationship with independent Nora. When a chance meeting leads to a turbulent romance between Linden and Ash, calamity follows. Ash, River, Linden, and Nora will never be the same.

Southern Gothic meets surrealism, CORRUPTED VESSELS is a story about terrifying angels, messy realities, and queer life on the margins.

“What an amazing story Corrupted Vessels is. Intriguing, fascinating, nauseating - overall mesmerizing. It made me question what's actually going on. A story of three trans characters that find themselves in an intense meet-up. Are they ready to transcend mortality and follow the angel's call? Or will they be stuck in their mortal flesh? Truth is, Ash is my favorite character, despite (or because of?), well, everything.”
“This was equal parts horrifying and endearing. I really liked Page’s writing style and the way they described things. This was vivid, imaginative and disturbing.”
“My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Hey folks, if you're into stories that mess with your head while making you think, you've gotta check out "Corrupted Vessels." This book is a wild ride from start to finish. So, what's it about? Imagine a group of young misfits, kinda like a cult, all tangled up in love, jealousy, and some seriously twisted stuff. The author, Briar Ripley Page, doesn't hold back. The writing is raw and hits you right in the feels. What I loved about this book is how real the characters are. They're dealing with their own issues, from queer identities to mental health, and it's all laid out there, no sugar-coating. It's like the author peels back the layers and shows you what's underneath, and it's not always pretty, but it's real. The book mixes horror, queer themes, and psychological drama like a pro. It's unsettling but in a good way, the kind that sticks with you. But heads up, it's a short read—only 130 pages. Just when you're getting into it, it ends, leaving you wanting more. So, bottom line? "Corrupted Vessels" is a deep dive into some heavy topics, but it's totally worth the read. If you're into queer fiction that goes to some dark places, this one's for you. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.”
“It's so hard to describe everything that I love about https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58809864.Corrupted_Vessels —these characters and their story sits so heavily in my heart, and I'm really glad I decided to re-read this book. This is one of those stories where you don't really know what's going on until the very end, and even then, you still have to make your own conclusions about what actually happened. It's such an exciting read, even for the second time, because there's so much going on, with so many careful details weaved in the pages: the Auspicious Window, the vibrant descriptions of the "temple", the characters' speech and actions, the teacups. Major spoiler: These kinds of details and descriptions are so enthralling to me, and Corrupted Vessels is rich with them. I can't leave a review for Corrupted Vessels without praising the main cast of characters: Ash, River, Linden, and Nora. Complex, nuanced characters are everything to me; I could read another 1000 pages about the lives and experiences of this tiny, queer cult. Ash, with all their charisma and ethereality, but also the palpable sense that they are profoundly unwell. River, not quite 16, who is caught in the crosshairs of childhood and adult responsibility, who is so susceptible to manipulation. The codependence between these two strays, the unhealthy dynamic, but also keeping each other alive and being the other's whole world. The role reversal of leader and follower, with River being the one who drags Ash out of the remains of their old world. Despite the surrealist elements of their narratives, these characters are so authentic, like people you've actually met in passing one time, but never saw again. All my love for Corrupted Vessels, and thank you to Briar for the swallow::tale paperback edition!”
