“I give Coronado 5* on the strength of "Running Out Of Dog" and the story told by "Until Gwen" and the CORONADO play at the end.
The middle three stories, ICU, Gone Down To Corpus, and Mushrooms are good short stories -- at least they would be, if they were all by themselves. But standing against the absolute emotional trauma of Running Out Of Dog & Until Gwen/Coronado, they don't measure up.
Running Out Of Dog feels like it could have been an entire novel. In fact, the way things sum up at the end, it feels to me like Lehane realized he had a massive story on his hand, but WANTED it to be a short story, so he cut it off. But even in that incomplete feeling, goddamn, is it brilliant, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Lehane is at his best work, really, when he is looking into souls like these. Souls that get worried about running out of dog.
Until Gwen is told in second person; and in its telling, it's another flash of brilliance. In true Lehane fashion, we get a drip-feed of the past, speckled among the pacing of the present, so that we know exactly as much as we need to know to experience MAXIMUM STRESS at any given moment. Another story that feels like it could have been an entire novel, however Until Gwen ends more naturally, and more completely.
Coronado is a stage play adaptation of the story told by Until Gwen, and through it we're given a bigger picture of the history of Bobby and Bobby's Father (the central characters of Until Gwen). Some folks say they prefer Until Gwen, but I'm glad I read them both. They fill in the picture even more. These people would make an excellent novel one day, if Lehane ever felt like he wanted to revisit them. But then again, maybe it's unnecessary. Maybe the little bite of trauma is all we need.”
