Sophia was made for him. Her perfect husband. She can feel it in her bones. He is perfect. Their home together in Arcadia Gardens is perfect. Everything is perfect.

It's just that he's away so much. So often. He works so hard. She misses him. And he misses her. He says he does, so it must be true. He is the perfect husband and everything is perfect.

But sometimes Sophia wonders about things. Strange things. Dark things. The look on her husband's face when he comes back from a long business trip. The questions he will not answer. The locked basement she is never allowed to enter. And whenever she asks the neighbors, they can't quite meet her gaze....

But everything is perfect. Isn't it?

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“4🌟 Pros: lusciuos prose, surprising development. Warnings: Concepts/themes that can be easily misinterpreted. Review: I have never read a book quite like this. The advice I was given was: do not read any reviews because they all spoil the twist. I stand by that advice, and I will try not to spoil. This novel is beautifully written with lines that had me stopping to grasp the gravity they held. The farther I got into the story, the more confused AND intrigued I became to figure out what was really happening. As things became clear, I began to understand why some people may not enjoy the story. There is a degree of satirical dramatic irony where it is drawing attention to the issue by exaggerating the issue. I loved it, but I can see how some would not. This is not a story you read for a huge fall-out climax with an epic ending. This is a story you read knowing the end is going to make you sit with your thoughts for a solid hour as you reinterpret your previously held understandings of the material. If you're willing to try something new, strange, poingant, and that can be read in a few hours - give it a try! I intend to seek out more of Valente's books after this!”
