“O quinto número da Clarkesworld traz dois contos de autores de quem nunca tinha ouvido falar. A ilustração da capa entitula-se “Aeropolis” e é da autoria de Tomasz Maronski.
“Chewing Up the Innocent“, Jay Lake
Este conto segue a descoberta por parte de um pintor em part-time da importância que a arte tem na sua vida. De desenhos ocasionais da amada filha Ariadne e outras pinturas muito mais alternativas, que servem basicamente como escape aos seus “fantasmas”, este homem passa a pintar profissionalmente, após incentivo de um amigo.
Esta história não me cativou. Os dilemas do protagonista quanto à sua vocação vs. vida familiar nada me disseram. O tom da escrita, entre o coloquial e o irreverente, também não contribuiu para aumentar o meu interesse. Deixou-me indiferente. 1/5
“Attar of Roses“, Sharon Mock
Rosalaia é uma feiticeira que vive nas montanhas a norte, com o seu pai, também ele feiticeiro. Vivem numa terra incorrupta, onde a magia flui a seu bel-prazer. No oeste, abundam feiticeiros tiranos, nas suas cidades cheias de escravos, de corrupção e de podridão. Rosalaia tem o poder da graça e da beleza, e por isso o pai mantém-na escondida no seu castelo; ainda assim desperta o interesse dos grandes senhores do oeste. Temendo um futuro negro para a sua terra, Rosalaia é forçada a aceitar um pedido de casamento e a viagem para terras de oeste acaba por revelar muitas surpresas.
Gostei deste conto. A história acaba por tomar um rumo algo inesperado, mostrando que nem tudo é o que parece, começando em Rosalaia e terminando nas expectativas que tem face ao amor. Achei a escrita poética e rica, e fica por isso a vontade de ler mais coisas desta escritora. – 3/5”
