Clanlands in New Zealand Reviews

4.0
“Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish head to New Zealand to explore its Scottish connections, history, and landscapes—alongside plenty of banter, travel mishaps, and whisky-fuelled chaos. It’s part travel diary, part history, and part two mates winding each other up. And that balance is what makes it so enjoyable. I went into this wondering if it could capture the same magic as the first Clanlands. And honestly? It comes very close. ⚔️ What stood out: 📖 The banter (again, top-tier) The dynamic between them is still the heart of it. It’s effortless, funny, and feels completely natural—never forced. 🌍 The change in setting Moving from Scotland to New Zealand gives it a fresh feel, but it still keeps that strong Scottish identity running through it—which I really appreciated. 🏴 The personal connection Being from Scotland myself, there’s always that question of whether it’ll feel a bit overdone or cliché… but like the first book, it stays on the right side of that line. It feels genuine. It’s maybe not quite as sharp or fresh as the first book—but that’s a high bar to clear. And the fact it comes this close says a lot. Clanlands in New Zealand takes everything that worked in the first book and drops it into a completely new setting—and somehow, it still just works. If you enjoyed the original, this is an easy recommendation. And if you’re into: 👉 Travel writing with personality 👉 Scottish history and connections abroad 👉 Two grown men fully embracing chaos energy …you’ll have a great time with this. ⭐ 4.25/5”
“This was mostly enjoyable as a reminder of some of the places I have been in NZ, but I’m not sure it would have resonated as well if I hadn’t already gone. Not sure I’d recommend to anyone who doesn’t also have some personal experiences they can map this back to.”
