Publisher Description

Since its publication in 1996, George Saunders’s debut collection has grown in esteem from a cherished cult classic to a masterpiece of the form, inspiring an entire generation of writers along the way. CivilWarLand in Bad Decline Reviews

4.0
“CivilWarLand in Bad Decline showcases George Saunders at his most engaging: a blend of dark humour, bizarre scenarios, and striking truths. On the positive side, his satire is impactful, both hilarious and unsettling simultaneously. However, the relentless bleakness throughout some stories can be quite intense, so it might be wise to take breaks while reading. The standout piece is undoubtedly 'CivilWarLand,' which brilliantly marries absurdity with poignant emotion. On the other hand, 'Downtrodden Mary’s Failed Campaign of Terror' falls short, feeling more like a sketch rather than a fully fleshed-out narrative. Overall, this collection offers a captivating yet dark experience that lingers in your thoughts long after you finish reading.”
Anxious Face with sweat“Cerebral, original, and very, very dark. The conceit of theme parks is interesting and effective, bringing something intangibly but viscerally real to each story. It develops the worlds in a way that makes sense to the people who live in them, but doesn’t have to make sense to the reader. The stories make you think about the state of the world without beating you over the head with a moral message. The worlds and characters are cruel, and the author doesn’t provide an easy way out. You empathize and then you’re forced to move on.”
