City of Bones

By Martha Wells
City of Bones by Martha Wells digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Before Martha Wells captured the hearts of MILLIONS with her Murderbot series, there was Khat, Sagai, and Elen, and a city risen out of death and decay…

The city of Charisat, a tiered monolith of the Ancients’ design, sits on the edge of the vast desert known as the Waste. Khat, a member of a humanoid race created by the Ancients to survive in the Waste, and Sagai, his human partner, are relic dealers working in the bottom tiers of society, trying to stay one step ahead of the Trade Inspectors.

When Khat is hired by the all-powerful Warders to find relics believed to be part of one of the Ancients' arcane engines, he, and his party, begin unravelling the mysteries of an age-old technology.

This they expected.

They soon find themselves as the last line of defense between the suffering masses of Charisat and a fanatical cult, bent on unleashing an evil upon the city with an undying thirst for bone.

That, they did not expect.

This updated and revised edition is the author’s preferred text.

“Purchased a hard copy at a bookstore while visiting family. This book lived in my backpack for nearly a year, and I stalled out about 60-100 pages in, not because I disliked the book, but mainly due to the fact that my life for the duration of when I was "reading" this book was not the most conducive to reading physical books. The only other books I'd read by Martha Wells when I originally picked up City of Bones was All Systems Red, and that had been several years ago. I read most of the Murderbot Diaries during my various hiatuses while reading City of Bones, and I do know that the Murderbot Diaries are some of Wells' more recent works, but her style is still very evident in City of Bones. I really really enjoy her writing style, especially in the strong voices her narrators have. Khat is a very interesting character to me and I enjoy the way he interacts with other characters. The world of City of Bones is a very interesting blend of fantasy and post-apocalyptic. It's a perfect balance between explaining what needs to be explained and leaving enough mystery to keep the reader intrigued and invested. The plot is a nice slow burn that explodes into a dramatic, face paced climax with several very well-done twists that made sense when looking back at things that had occurred earlier in the story. I hope to someday come back and read this book over a shorter period of time, since I feel like I lost a lot in only reading a few pages at a time over the course of months, often going for weeks or months without picking up the book.”
“this book was pretty interesting especially when it came to setting and characters. the pacing was what made it a bit difficult for me to read and made the ending hard to be invested in. I do wish I had been able to enjoy the ending as much as the build up to it but overall an okay book”
