“While I really appreciate the conclusion to both this novel and the trilogy, and getting to see where these two characters ultimately end up, I felt like Cities of the Plain revisits a lot of the same thematic and emotional ground covered in the first two books.
It’s noticeably shorter and moves at a much faster pace than the 2 previous books, which felt a bit jarring. Which is weird because at times, the story felt strangely plotless and it would slowly move toward its conclusion without much momentum. Many of the early scenes felt disconnected from the central narrative, while the moments that did move the plot forward often came and went so quickly that they never had much weight to me.
That said, the first half is surprisingly funny, with several genuinely memorable moments scattered throughout its entirety that brought some welcome levity to the story.”

The novels of the American writer, Cormac McCarthy, have received a number of literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. His works adapted to film include All the Pretty Horses, The Road, and No Country for Old Men—the latter film receiving four Academy Awards, including the award for Best Picture. He died in 2023.
