Cigar Box Banjo

By Paul Quarrington & Roddy Doyle
Cigar Box Banjo by Paul Quarrington & Roddy Doyle digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

This eclectic, funny, and moving book tracks a life lived in music and words. Paul Quarrington ruminates on the bands of his childhood; his restless youth, spent playing bass with the cult band Joe Hall and the Continental Drift; and his incarnation, in middle age, as rhythm guitarist and singer with the band Porkbelly Futures.

Ranging through rock ’n’ roll, the blues, folk, country and soul, he explores how songs are made, how they work, and why they affect us so deeply. This is also a book about friendship. In his imitably entertaining way, Quarrington recounts the adventures and vicissitudes he and his fellow band members share as they cope with everything from broken strings to broken marriages, making a last stab at that elusive thing called success.

“This was written by Paul Quarrington who was one of my uncle's very good friends. There is a full chapter about my uncle”
“I have been a Paul Quarrington fan for years. Like many people who met him I was not just a fan of his art but of him. Reading this book had me pausing lots to add songs to my Spotify playlist and made me reminisce over many musical moments of significance in my life. As a music lover I found the history and references in the memoir awesome. As a Paul Quarrington fan his humour and sweetness made me miss him even more. I would recommend this book highly and suggest you read his catalogue if you haven’t already.”
