Christine Falls by John Banville digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

One of Stephen King's Best Books of the 21st Century
"It was not the dead that seemed to Quirke uncanny but the living."

Quirke is a haunted, hard-drinking pathologist stumbling through the brooding gloom of 1950s Dublin. It is a society of secrets and meanness, dominated by a rigid hierarchy—as Quirke is reminded of when he catches his well-connected brother-in-law faking morgue records.

The cause of this tampering is the corpse of a mysterious woman: Christine Falls. But who is she, and how did she die? Quirke’s hunt for the answers to these questions will draw him into a transatlantic conspiracy and pit him against some of Dublin’s most powerful forces, from the Catholic Church to members of his own family.

Originally published under the pseudonym Benjamin Black, John Banville’s debut thriller reveals a new side of “Ireland’s greatest living novelist” (The New York Times).

Christine Falls Reviews

“it took me a bit to understand that this was really more of A Novel than a Tasty Little Mystery but once I understood that Quirke was not a typical series lead, it really grew on me and I liked it a lot. the main reason I am writing a review, however, is to let you know that the audiobook is performed by Timothy Dalton who THROWS HIMSELF into the narration. He clearly was accepting no notes -- it is the fastest pace narration I have yet to hear (positive), he has some whistle-y s sounds (negative), and he is so committed to the performance (with everything except accents) that sometimes you're like, am I allowed to be listening to this? is anyone??? is this FOR an audience or did they accidentally release a recording of Dalton submitting himself to some fervent spirit? he is growling and whining and breathing heavily and laughing and gushing and sometimes I had to just take a break and read the book because it felt like I had intruded on something private between Timothy Dalton and himself and I guess also a sound engineer who had a couple unprecedented intense days on the job”
