They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“I don't know if this is based off of real African Mythology or if things were just made up, but either way it was amazing. The world building was good, sucked you in right in the beginning. The magic system was awesome too. I loved the story very much, and it's so cool that they are making a movie/series out of it. Can't wait to watch it and finish reading the book series. I listened to this on Audio and the only thing I didn't like about it was it was confusing to tell which POV was whose. 🤷🏼‍♀️ but I think the narrator did a superb job. p.s The Author's note at the end made me cry. There is so much injustice in the world and it needs to stop.”
““ We are all children of blood and bone”. So glad I got to listen to this book. Story kept me guessing at times and looking forward to the movie when it come out.”
Loudly Crying Face“This book was beautiful it had a bit of everything: ✨ Magic 🗡️ Betrayal 💔 Heartbreak ❤️‍🩹 Sacrifice 💖 Touch of Romance 🤏🏾 💪🏾 Strong female protagonists and leaders with nontoxic supportive males. 🦹🏾‍♂️ a Vile villain who makes your blood boil at every turn and one that you want so badly to see the light ! 💡 💓 Overall sense of hope for the future of Orisha and the Maji/Diviners ⚠️ But please be advised that there is also a lot of : ⚔️ Violence and hate and war 🙇🏾‍♀️ self hate 😢 grief It took me a bit to get into it but once I did I fell in love with MOST of the characters and the story just blew me away. Just when I thought I knew what was what something changed the author certainly kept me on my toes. The book was beautifully written and it was truly great to have a work of fiction that highlights the African Diaspora and gave true beauty and understanding to a culture/religion that is still misunderstood til this day. If you love fiction, fantasy, magic, heartbreak, and hope all in one this one is for you. I am definitely going to be checking out the rest of the series before it is adapted to film.”
