Publisher Description

The fifth Charlie Chan novel sends the Honolulu detective into an international manhunt that stretches far beyond his usual ground. When a prominent investigator is struck down before he can complete his pursuit of a murderer, Charlie Chan is drawn into a case that rapidly expands across oceans and borders. Taking up the chase, Chan must follow a trail of deception, violence, and hidden identity through a shifting international landscape. Unlike the more contained mysteries of earlier entries, Charlie Chan Carries On broadens the scale of the series, combining classic detective logic with the energy of a globe-spanning pursuit. Chan’s method remains the steady center of the novel: patient observation, quiet intelligence, and a manner so unassuming that others repeatedly fail to grasp how much he sees. Earl Derr Biggers uses this fifth installment to show how flexible the Charlie Chan series could be, moving from drawing-room deduction and regional mystery into something larger and more mobile without sacrificing clarity or control. For readers of classic crime fiction, the novel remains a strong example of interwar detective storytelling, balancing suspense, movement, and methodical detection. About Earl Derr Biggers

Earl Derr Biggers (1884–1933) was an American novelist and playwright best known for creating Charlie Chan, one of the most recognizable detectives in twentieth-century popular fiction. Educated at Harvard and active in both fiction and drama, Biggers brought a polished narrative style and strong sense of structure to his mystery writing. The Charlie Chan novels, published between 1925 and 1932, helped establish the character as a lasting presence in detective fiction and popular culture. Biggers’ mysteries are remembered for their emphasis on deduction, pacing, and controlled storytelling rather than sensational violence. Charlie Chan’s calm intelligence, courtesy, and persistence gave the series a distinctive tone within the broader tradition of Golden Age-style crime fiction. Charlie Chan Carries On, published in 1930, stands as the fifth book in that sequence and reflects the series at a moment of widening ambition.
