Change of Seasons
ByPublisher Description
John Oates was born at the perfect time, paralleling the birth of rock 'n roll. Raised in a small Pennsylvania town, he was exposed to folk, blues, soul, and R&B. Teaming up with Daryl Hall in the late 1960s, they developed a style of music that was uniquely their own. John uncovers the grit and struggle it took to secure a recording contract with the legendary Atlantic Records and chronicles the artistic twists and turns that resulted in a DJ discovering an obscure album track that would become their first hit record. This is not your typical rock and roll story. John was focused on creating great music. Along the way he achieved incredible success, battling the ever-changing pop music landscape and coming to terms with complex managerial, business, and personal challenges.
Daryl Hall and John Oates have over 20 albums together, more than 60 million records sold, and 29 Top 40 hits. They are the most successful pop duo in the world and members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And yet John's story has never been told. Relying on his many hand-written journals, he brings to light many fascinating stories spanning his entire life with a journalist's eye and a poet's heart.
"Fascinating. . . . Highly recommended for fans of Hall & Oates." —
"Plenty of entertaining anecdotes." —
"An exceedingly entertaining, somewhat rueful chronicle of his life. . . . Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, and Edgar Winter all make appearances." —

“It’s not too much of a surprise to people that know me that my favorite band is Hall & Oates. For as long as I can remember, I’ve thrived off of 80s pop and rock and I still do to this day. At a certain point, I realized Hall & Oates 1980s catalogue was almost everything I loved about 80s music all rolled up into one band. But I’ll be honest, before starting this book I didn’t know too much about their timeline as a band and I knew even less about both Daryll Hall and John Oates as individuals. As many times as I’ve listened to all their big 80s hits, I only knew a few of the big hits of the 70s and I have yet to listen to all their albums in their entirety. Now since reading this though, I already have plans to listen through their entire repertoire and perhaps purchase more of their albums on vinyl, which I do have a few already. And it’s not even that reading Oates’ story has reinvigorated my love of their music, it has made me understand it more. The further I read, the more I saw their work through John’s eyes, the eyes of a songwriter. And now I hope to hear the music with fresh ears. The meaningful songs have revealed even more meaning to me. Of course John Oates has far more to him than being one half of an amazing musical duo and he has no trouble showing the reader that in the book. Many of his stories are short, but each gives a glimpse into his life and his mind. I also found the shorter chapters kept my attention more and I had a lot of trouble putting the book down until it was completely finished. I highly recommend “Change of Seasons” for any fan of Hall & Oates or for anyone who would like to get into the mind of a brilliant musician and songwriter.”
