“DO NOT READ this book if you are a true aficionado of Du Maurier; you will be disappointed. This is not her best work, although she does a bang-up job with the uncompleted manuscript of Quiller-Couch’s given to her by his daughter following his death. With prose as purple as this, even the most talented of writers would have trouble making this sow’s ear into anything resembling a silk purse. And yet… If you can get through the first 15 or so chapters, you see glimpses of what could have been a really good story: a “modern-day” retelling of the fatal love story of Tristan and Iseult. If only Daphne had been given carte blanche to edit the garrulous writing of "Q," a much tighter, more thrilling, and compelling tale would likely have been the result.”
“as a big fan of du maurier’s, i was excited for this one- despite it being the author quiller-couch’s start and only given to du maurier to finish after his death. however, i was disappointed. this had none of her flair and succinct beauty in writing style. maybe i’m not a fan of ancient legend retellings but the narrative as a whole dragged for me. however, i enjoyed the world description and the characters, as in all of du maurier’s tales, were brought to life in a way that makes me miss them now that the book is over. definitely not my favourite of hers, but holds her literary talent all the same. she can never fully disappoint.”
“Im not gonna lie girl this was not your best work. I’ll just blame it on the other guy that helped write it or something Ok wait I just read that she just finished it and the other guy wrote it. In that case the ending was the best part thank goodness”
