Publisher Description

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales, mystery novels, and horror fiction. He was a leading ghost story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. No less an authority than M.R. James described Le Fanu as “absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories”—but he was far more than that. His short novel Carmilla is an early tale of vampirism, and it has lesbian elements as well, making it of interest to many scholars and readers today. His best-known works are, of course, Carmilla, plus Uncle Silas and The House by the Churchyard.

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“a quick, easy, and immersive read. i felt as though i was looking out at the deep forest with laura, and wanting carmilla just the same. reading the 2019 version edited by carmen maria machado was definitely the most enriching and with her guidance, the story became something more than itself. i wish we had more time for the romance between laura and carmilla, but only so much can be expected from a man. “I live in you; and you would die for me, I love you so. “”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“I was pleasantly surprised at how much of a easy read this was. I’m usually wary of classics because they have a tendency to drone on, but Carmilla was hauntingly beautiful and tragically romantic. I found the relationship between Carmilla and Laura to be extremely tender, and reminded me a lot of early family relationships I had as a child. Though there was some flowery language, I found myself both wanting more and satisfied with the suspense of it all.”

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“Honestly shocked I have never heard of this book before. I thought it was a beautiful story and it’s crazy that it was written decades before Dracula. I love how the courtship between Carmilla and Laura was so normalized. I just wish that the book was longer and played out their romantic connection a bit more.”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“For a classic piece, it has a lot of modern language which I feel is a probably a reason it’s an easy read. I knew it was going to happen but just sad about the ending :(”

Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while now and am very glad that I finally got around to reading it! It is very well-written and I found myself being unable to put it down at times. I love how it’s written from the perspective of Laura looking back on past events and I found it to be creepier than I expected it to be. Overall, it’s a great classic book!”
