“A witty, deeply critical take on God and the Old Testament. The more I read Saramago, the more I love his prose, his humor, and his social commentary. The book covers several Biblical stories from the point of view of a sinner—Cain—, analysing the circle of violence not only among men, but also between men and God. It is not a faithful retelling of the Bible, taking some fictional liberties that help the story along. However, it does question God's intentions and the fundamental pillars of religion (Saramago was an atheist, after all), so this book may not be for you if you're deeply religious. That said, it was an amazing and engaging read that will leave you thinking well after you reach the end.”
