譯者邊棣，生長在新疆。上過山、下過鄉、務過農、做過工、執過教。1991年從原新疆醫學院自費出國留學，獲得美國亞利桑那大學藥理和毒理學哲學博士學位。後移民美國，一直在醫藥公司從事神經藥理方面的藥物研發工作，直至退休。文字工作方面，出版過科學方面的著作，做過神經和疼痛學科雜誌的審稿人等。現居住在美國加利福尼亞州的洛杉磯。
作者拉賓德拉納特·泰戈爾（Rabindranath Tagore，1861-1941）是印度孟加拉文藝復興時期的博學大師，集詩人、作家、劇作家、作曲家、哲學家、社會改革家和畫家於一身。他在19世紀末至20世紀初，以情境主義（Contextual Modernism）重塑了孟加拉文學、音樂及印度藝術。他的代表作《吉檀迦利》蘊含著 "深邃敏感、新穎優美" 的詩歌。1913年，他因《吉檀迦利》成為首位因詩歌作品獲得諾貝爾獎的非歐洲作家。1916年，泰戈爾自譯並出版了他的第一部英文短歌詩集《飛鳥》，1926年又出版了最後一部短歌詩集《螢火蟲》，使其詩歌的哲學與文學成就達到了巔峰。
泰戈爾的詩歌被認為充滿靈性且富於變化，而他的優雅散文與富有魔力的詩篇，最初在印度次大陸廣受歡迎，隨後影響遍及全球。1915年，英國授予他爵位，但在1919年，他主動放棄，以抗議阿姆利則慘案，該事件中英軍槍殺了約400名印度示威者。泰戈爾最初在西方被視為神秘主義者，這一形象或許使許多西方讀者忽視了他作為改革者與反殖民主義批評家的重要角色。他被譽為孟加拉的吟游詩人（The Bard of Bengal），並以古魯德夫（Gurudev）、詩聖（Kobiguru）和世界詩人（Biswokobi）等尊稱廣為人知。
