“By Invitation Only was an enjoyable young adult contemporary that landed in the middle for me. I didn't dislike my time reading this, I just wasn't in love with it. What I appreciated most was that the story focused more on the girls than a romance. I love that it wasn't spent majority on Chaplin and Piper fighting and being petty. While there are romantic elements throughout that I did enjoy, the heart of the book is really Piper and Chaplin's friendship, personal growth, family dynamics, and navigating the outside pressures.
I liked both Chaplin and Piper and enjoying watching their friendship develop, but I didn't emotionally connect to them. I was sympathetic especially with their relationships with their mothers. I was enjoying their growth enough to keep reading just didn't change my life.
The plot itself felt dry at some points making it more character driven. The character work was strong enough to keep engaged because I was enjoying their friendship. I also appreciated the ending, felt very satisfied with how things ended.
Overall, while this one didn't wow me, I do see potential in Alexandra Brown Chang's future books and excited to see what else they write.”
