Butter

By Asako Yuzuki & Polly Barton
Butter by Asako Yuzuki & Polly Barton digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer, and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story

There are two things that I simply cannot tolerate: feminists and margarine

Gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in the Tokyo Detention House convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, whom she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation’s imagination, but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors. That is until journalist Rika Machida writes a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew, and Kajii can’t resist writing back.

Rika, the only woman in her news office, works late each night, rarely cooking more than ramen. As the visits unfold between her and the steely Kajii, they are closer to a master class in food than journalistic research. Rika hopes this gastronomic exchange will help her soften Kajii, but it seems that Rika might be the one changing. Do she and Kajii have more in common than she once thought?

Inspired by the real case of a convicted con woman and serial killer—the “Konkatsu Killer”—Asako Yuzuki’s Butter is a vivid, unsettling exploration of misogyny, obsession, romance, and the transgressive pleasures of food in Japan.

“Did not expect this book from start to finish. I picked this up based on the cover and the description from the back alone. It took me awhile to pick this up, but I’m glad I did. The writing is easy to fall into, the story I had no expectations of what I was getting into, and by the end I felt really good overall by my experience of this book. Some plot lines felt a bit random at times, especially near the end. But the descriptions of the food, and the main characters journey for self care and self love was enough to keep me going. The side characters (besides Kajii) were enjoyable completely to me. I not only felt like I knew them, but I took a lot away from this book emotionally. I appreciated the aspects of femininity from the perspective of a Japanese woman and was able to make a lot of connections to how these things are viewed as well in the US. This book felt like a warm meal, and a warm hug by the end.”
“If the movies “Julia & Julia” (about Julia Child) and “Monster” (about Aileen Wuornos) had a baby, it would be this book. Conceptually, that sounds really interesting. Unfortunately, the execution fell short. I appreciated the exploration of misogyny in Japanese culture but I found the writing style to be a little mundane. I didn’t find the characters likeable to the point that I didn’t really care what happened to them. This resulted in me skimming the last couple of chapters.”
“made me hungry, for food, for connection and everything in between.”
