“What I loved most: this is a British story, not an American one. It gave me context for conversations I've been having with a family member for years why Bridgerton can cast Black actors as aristocracy without "rewriting history," why I knew certain names but never knew what they actually did, why the US narrative of emancipation feels so simplified once you know the full picture.
But the book also left me with a question that still sits heavy. The British Quakers in this story, heroic, tireless, radical, were writing letters to American Quakers who, in many cases, supported sending freed Black people back to Africa through the American Colonization Society. Same faith. Same Bible. Same "inward light." Radically different ideas about what freedom should look like. It's a reminder that even the people fighting on the right side were still shaped by the worlds they lived in, and that the transatlantic abolition movement was never as unified as the history books make it seem.
