Burn

By Elissa Sussman
Burn by Elissa Sussman digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Burn is the thrilling companion to Elissa Sussman’s masterful and original fairy tale, Stray. This engaging and imaginative continuation of the original fairy tale begun in Stray will appeal to readers of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and fans of the musicals Wicked and Into the Woods.

After helping to rescue Princess Aislynn, Elanor has finally rejoined the rebel camp she calls home. Stolen from her parents at a young age and forced into service by the Wicked Queen, Elanor now wants nothing more than to see the queen removed from power. But Elanor has secrets, mistakes she’s spent years trying to forget, and the closer the rebels get to the throne, the harder it is for Elanor to keep her past hidden away. Booklist said of Stray, “Sussman delightfully mixes dystopian tension with retold fairy tales, and the result is something wholly original.” Includes a map.

“I was so disappointed that Burn follows Elanor, a character we barely met in the first book of the series, instead of Aislynn. While Aislynn was the main character and sole focus of Stray, we don't even hear her name until 25% of the way into Burn. I wanted more Aislynn; I wanted to pick up on her story. Elanor's feels like a detour. It feels like more questions than answers. To be fair, we're completely removed from the world of the royals so the academies and fairy godmothers aren't mentioned at all. We weave between Elanor's past as a child serving the Wicked Queen Josetta and the current day Orphan operation to kill Josetta. I feel like instead of giving us insight to Josetta, this only gives us more questions. I guess we'll never be sure what her motives are. I love the progress on the Four Sisters lore, though. The animals were obvious, but tying in the magical objects was the first real ah-ha moment we got in the series. I like the way Elissa Sussman treats sexuality and gender. Despite not loving this as much as Stray, I hope she writes quickly, as I'm pretty much dying for the next installment in the series.
