“Ooo this was fun! I am doing the @the_fold reading challenge and February is a speculative fiction book by a Canadian Black author. Nalo Hopkinson is new to me, but I'm hooked now. Hopkinson's debut novel, BROWN GIRL IN THE RING, is set in a not-so-dystopic future, where the core of Toronto is hollowed out and everyone who can, has left for the suburbs. The feds have cut transfers to the provinces and provinces to the core of cities, and Toronto is a place where the lawless rule. This coming-of-age and action-adventure story is layered with beautiful Caribbean folklore, traditions, language, and ceremony, and full of magic. It was immersive and rich with a premise that felt completely believable even when the action was other-worldly.”
“I read this several years ago and it blew me away. Such an imaginative story.”
