Publisher Description

A criminal mastermind creates violent tableaus in abandoned Detroit warehouses in Lauren Beukes's genre-bending novel of suspense.

Detective Gabriella Versado has seen a lot of bodies. But this one is unique even by Detroit's standards: half boy, half deer, somehow fused together. As stranger and more disturbing bodies are discovered, how can the city hold on to a reality that is already tearing at its seams?

If you're Detective Versado's geeky teenage daughter, Layla, you commence a dangerous flirtation with a potential predator online. If you're desperate freelance journalist Jonno, you do whatever it takes to get the exclusive on a horrific story. If you're Thomas Keen, known on the street as TK, you'll do what you can to keep your homeless family safe -- and find the monster who is possessed by the dream of violently remaking the world.

If Lauren Beukes's internationally bestselling The Shining Girls was a time-jumping thrill ride through the past, her Broken Monsters is a genre-redefining thriller about broken cities, broken dreams, and broken people trying to put themselves back together again.

"Scary as hell and hypnotic. I couldn't put it down...I'd grab it if I were you." -- Stephen King

“hmmm... I am not sure what to say. This is one of those books I started, then out down because it was just... slow. slow. slow. I picked it up again about a month later, and am happy I finished it. I think it surprises me people call it a horror book, I mean I understand how the content could be like that but there was 0% suspense. it was never really a "edge of your seat " feel throughout the book, with the exception of the last few chapters, which is also the only intense, action part of the book. I think if you like slow burn Books, this is for you. I think some of the characters were a bit... book written, just in that the only time anyone would act that way would be in a book... the teens in the book do some incredibly risky things that just seem a bit... extreme for teens to actually do, and stereotypical in other ways "ok bye B****, hey S**t, I know you forced me to confront a pedophile and then ditched me-but I'm sorry I was such a b****". overall the ending was good but hard to follow just as there really wasn't an introduction to the paranormal aspect throughout the book. I wouldn't say it is a twist or surprise necessarily given the books reviews.”
“This book was brilliant; it kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a supernatural thriller, and I loved how the author delved into the minds of every character, especially on page 764, where each character's perspective was presented sequentially within a single chapter. I not only read this book but also listened to the audiobook version, (while I haven't been feeling my best lately). The narration enhanced the experience significantly. The author clearly demonstrated mastery in crafting this unsettling yet deeply satisfying story. I appreciate how the narrative kept me guessing, as I thrive on that sense of mystery while reading. As I always say, I encourage everyone to read the book and form their own opinion.”
Thinking Face“Wow! That was a wild ride! I really enjoyed this audiobook, and the narrator’s brought so much life to the characters. Knowing who the bad guy was didn’t even bother me bc I just wanted to know more about these characters. Very detailed thriller turned horror.”
