Broad Strokes
ByPublisher Description
Historically, major women artists have been excluded from the mainstream art canon. Aligned with the resurgence of feminism in pop culture, Broad Strokes offers an entertaining corrective to that omission. Art historian Bridget Quinn delves into the lives and careers of 15 female artists from around the globe in text that's smart, feisty, educational, and an enjoyable read. Replete with beautiful reproductions of the artists' works and contemporary portraits of each artist by renowned illustrator Lisa Congdon, this is art history from the Renaissance to Abstract Expressionism for the modern art lover, reader, and feminist.

“This was a really cool journey through art history through 15 female artists, with splashes of the authors life as well.
Isn't it funny how many well accomplished female artists tend to be overshadowed by their male counterparts? Or often largely forgotten by history because "women are just not good at it". I was not at all surprised to learn about how a few of these historical artists had their art attributed to men from their time instead, or even how their work was discredited once the public learned it was actually by a woman.
Highly recommend picking this book up (especially as either a print or ebook copy so you can enjoy the images of art included throughout) if you're at all creative - as after reading this I find myself inspired to get back to making my own art in some fashion. These women all just created, as much as life allowed them to.”
“I had to read this for my Women in Art History class, but I would have stuck it out anyway on my own due to Bridget Quinn’s amazing writing and punchy spin. She takes 15 amazing women and extends them, pulling in the reader and putting them in the timeframe. I loved every chapter, every woman, and every story.
I cried out of pain for the history I didn’t know, laughed at the moments Quinn cleverly crafted, and grinned proudly at pages and art in front of me feeling like a true feminist finally with a twinge more of an understanding of what came before me.
The artists chosen were perfect, and how she strings them together lines up beautifully.
I would reread this again, and will definitely carry this book with me through life from now on as a reference point on how to stand out and on how *it* can be done despite everything.”
