Brightness Reef Reviews

3.5
“remarkable. I almost DNF’d multiple times at the beginning, out of frustration over how many characters and alien races there were to keep track of, but I’m so glad I didn’t. Brin created a world I wanted to live in forever. This book, however, does have the same flaws as Startide Rising - he makes some really weird choices with his female characters. In a book that is 95% character building, these choices are glaring. One of the main characters, a doctor/mathematician named Sara, says she thinks her patient would like her more if she was…prettier? This same character is threatened with r*pe and is flattered when a man protests? These were very far and few between, but they took me out of it completely.”
