“The book is written in present tense and pulls it off well; it feels like everything truly is happening as-is. Three defenders and a group of tourists seems like a small amount of people on an entire planet, but each character gets fairly fleshed out—which leads to a lot of side plots and character changes, put I found it satisfying to read nonetheless. (The teenage pornography troupe is a bit odd though.) The ending is a tear-jerker, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys science-fiction.”
“This book starts out with a Gilligan’s Island premise — a diverse group of tourists visit a remote planet to see the rare sight of a supernova.
It unfolds into something like four separate stories with those characters, and I feel like each would have been a characteristically stellar (wink) Tiptree short story, but the combination isn’t so cohesive. There’s an older woman psychically connected to her comatose sister, a group of teenage sex workers whose options in life are limited because of their work, a follow-up to the Stars Tears story and a revenge story for a destroyed planet.
If that sounds like a lot and kind of random, it is!”
