Publisher Description

"Murphy’s dramatic nonfiction narrative recounting of one of the first open heart surgeries ever performed is not to be missed." —School Library Journal (starred review)

In 1944, a groundbreaking operation repaired the congenital heart defect known as blue baby syndrome. The operation’s success brought the surgeon Alfred Blalock international fame and paved the way for open-heart surgery. But the technique had been painstakingly developed by Vivien Thomas, Blalock’s African American lab assistant, who stood behind Blalock in the operating room to give him step-by-step instructions.

The stories of this medical and social breakthrough and the lives of Thomas, Blalock, and their colleague Dr. Helen Taussig are intertwined in this compelling nonfiction narrative.

“An excellent read on the lives of the trio instrumental to surgically curing tetralogy of fallot (blue baby syndrome), Alfred Blalock, Helen Taussig, and Vivian Thomas. Of particular note is Thomas, Blakock's underpaid African American research assistant. Due to economic circumstances, Thomas was unable to go to medical school. But with Blalock's tutelage, he was a very capable researcher. He faced a lot of racism at Johns Hopkins, that Blalock did little to deflect. Thomas was the one who developed the surgical procedure to mitigate the effects of ToF on dogs, but because he wasn't a licensed physician he could not perform the actual surgery. Thomas had to teach the procedure to Blalock, who had previously only watched. But a baby was dying, so Blalock had to perform the first surgery with Thomas over his shoulder walking him through it. As a consequence of this surgical procedure, the landscape of medicine changed- more medical supply companies started making tools for cardio thoracic surgery, the need to develop ICU protocols were developed.”
“Fun to see Russell Nelson’s name in one sentence. :)”
