Publisher Description

"A delicious, dark, adrenaline rush of a book. I'm already dying to see Charlie Hall's next con." - New York Times bestselling author, Alix E. Harrow

#1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black makes her stunning adult debut with Book of Night, a modern dark fantasy of betrayals, secret societies, and a dissolute thief of shadows, in the vein of Neil Gaiman and Erin Morgenstern.

Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make.

She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

Now, she’s trying to distance herself from past mistakes, but getting out isn’t easy. Bartending at a dive, she’s still entirely too close to the corrupt underbelly of the Berkshires. Not to mention that her sister Posey is desperate for magic, and that Charlie's shadowless, and possibly soulless, boyfriend has been hiding things from her. When a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie descends into a maelstrom of murder and lies.

Determined to survive, she’s up against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, gloamists, and the people she loves best in the world—all trying to steal a secret that will give them vast and terrible power.

Thumbs Up“I was looking forward to reading another holly black book but this was sadly a very disappointing read for me. I found it very difficult to get into the story and couldn’t connect to the characters.”

Expressionless Face“This book was SO slow. TOO slow. The characters were very likable, but there was no sort of development and the dialogue for each character seemed to be the exact same for the entirety of the book? I really didn’t enjoy reading this or even understand the gloamist/blight idea until page 200. Even then, there was such a terrible ending that was pretty much revealed about a 100 pages prior to the end. I love the idea, but this book was simply just a flop. Unfortunately.”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“What a dark, twisted ride! I could not put this book down. Holly Black tells suspenseful tale in a unique, shadowy world centered around underdog hero, Charlie Hall, who is a low-level con artist wrapped up in a much bigger scheme. If you’re looking for an urban fantasy with a dark vibe, give this a read.”

Slightly Smiling Face“WHAT WORKED? The world and the twists and turns are really good. WHAT DID NOT WORK? the book took quiet sometime to start. In a 300 pages book nothing valuable happens in the first 100 pages. Charlie never not ends up becoming a character the readers can invest in. Finally, the love story which was a good thing in the story does not get enough focus. VERDICT: A dragging start which gets better with progress”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Glad I stuck with this book, at first the non-linear timeline threw me off but it all ties up nicely in the end. I feel like I felt the revelations coming but I didn’t completely see them till they were confirmed.”
