Book of Ages

Book of Ages by Jill Lepore digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

National Book Award Finalist

From one of our most accomplished and widely admired historians, a revelatory portrait of Benjamin Franklin’s youngest sister and a history of history itself. Like her brother, Jane Franklin was a passionate reader, a gifted writer, and an astonishingly shrewd political commentator. Unlike him, she was a mother of twelve.

Benjamin Franklin, who wrote more letters to his sister than he wrote to anyone else, was the original American self-made man; his sister spent her life caring for her children. They left very different traces behind. Making use of an amazing cache of little-studied material, including documents, objects, and portraits only just discovered, Jill Lepore brings Jane Franklin to life in a way that illuminates not only this one woman but an entire world—a world usually lost to history. Lepore’s life of Jane Franklin, with its strikingly original vantage on her remarkable brother, is at once a wholly different account of the founding of the United States and one of the great untold stories of American history and letters: a life unknown.

“This book does its best to tell the life story of Benjamin Franklin’s younger sister, Jane. The youngest two of SEVENTEEN children, Jane and Benjamin were close and wrote letters back and forth from their late teen years until their deaths in their 80’s. Those letters form the backbone of this book. I gotta be real, this book was boring. There wasn’t a lot of source material for the author to draw from, yet somehow this book is SO. LONG. Jane and Benjamin came from a huge family and Jane had twelve children of her own. I am not kidding when I tell you that every person in this book had one of 5 names. There were SO many Janes, Benjamins, Josiahs, Sarahs and Ebenezers. It was nearly impossible for me to keep the people straight. Jane had so many kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews (all with the same names) and since she lived to be quite old, it became so difficult for me to track who was who. If this book had been 1/3 as long. I think it could have been great. It was incredibly well researched but it was just way too long for such a thin story.”
“it’s a book that talks about Benjamin Franklin’s sister (who i had no clue existed bc he never mentioned her once even tho they were extremely close) Jane. lowkey her life was pretty sad, especially when the book would compare it to her brother Benjamin. Her kids, grandkids, and greatgrandkids would die before her and she’s constantly mourning. if she were a woman she would have been successful like Benjamin and i think the book is trying to show that. real good book, i recommend it”
