AN ELLE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

For twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fueled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry.

When Sciona finally passes the qualifying exam and becomes a highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues are determined to make her feel unwelcome—and, instead of a qualified lab assistant, they give her a janitor.

What neither Sciona nor her peers realize is that her taciturn assistant was not always a janitor. Ten years ago, he was a nomadic hunter who lost his family on their perilous journey from the wild plains to the city. But now he sees the opportunity to understand the forces that decimated his tribe, drove him from his homeland, and keep the privileged in power.

At first, mage and outsider have a fractious relationship. But working together, they uncover an ancient secret that could change the course of magic forever—if it doesn’t get them killed first.

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Really enjoyed this one! There are a lot of technical descriptions of the magic system but the writing style is clear and easy to follow. the FMC, Sciona, is very flawed and unlike any female character I've encountered. Her growth is flawed and honest. Highly recommend!”
“Another fantastic book by ML Wang. The story line was great, steady paced, with morally grey characters. The magic system was unique - more like coding than anything mystical. Sciona, FMC, is engaging but egoistical. She annoyed me at points but her character was strong and drove the story. The tension between characters was intense- many difficult conversations and revelations. All in all a great read and a satisfying end.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“ML Wang has now entered the small list of authors I enjoy so much I will read whatever they put out and not question it. Although the sword of Kaigen was a better story in my opinion, this book did a great job of doing what it was trying to do. The subtle themes explored in the book, the character development, and the mid-way gut punch I am now convinced is a Wang staple were all amazing. Wang is also phenomenal at writing punchable characters like Renthorn in this and Misaki’s father-in-law in Kaigen.”
