Blanca & Roja

By Anna-Marie McLemore
Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Award-winning author Anna-Marie McLemore retells Swan Lake in this spellbinding YA story of sisters who are each other's best friends—and worst enemies.

The biggest lie of all is the story you think you already know.

The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they’re also rivals, Blanca is as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative. They know that, because of a generations-old spell, their family is bound to a bevy of swans deep in the woods. They know that, one day, the swans will pull them into a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan.

But when two local boys become drawn into the game, the swans’ spell intertwines with the strange and unpredictable magic lacing the woods, and all four of their fates depend on facing truths that could either save or destroy them.

Blanca & Roja is the captivating story of sisters, friendship, love, hatred, and the price we pay to protect our hearts.

“I can understand why people enjoy this book, but I found it a bit repetitive and mildly frustrating. Much of the conflict that took place happened by misunderstandings and a lack of communication, and some of the characters' logic were a bit confusing. It also felt like there were too many ideas and problems happening at once, and they all got quickly solved in a way that felt anti- climatic. The writing is good, but for me it felt just a tad overwritten at times, and I would find myself getting lost in the descriptions more than once. Overall, I liked the idea behind this, and I really appreciated having Page as a character because I could identify with him in some ways, but the book just fell a little flat for me.”
“I bought this book at my local library. It wasn't worth the dollar I paid for it. It seemed like a unique premise, and sounded really interesting. The cover was beautiful. So of course, I grabbed it. Unfortunately, I had no idea what was going on in this book, and I literally had to force myself to finish it. The POV's were confusing, and the magic was just really odd. Not in a good way, either. About halfway through I realized it was supposed to be a fairy-tale retelling. I wasted about 6 hours of my life trying to read this book. In short, this book was not worth it.”
