Publisher Description
The magical island of Chynchin is facing conquerors from abroad and something sinister from within in this entrancing fantasy from the Grand Master Award–winning author Nalo Hopkinson.
Veycosi, in training as a griot (an historian and musician), hopes to sail off to examine the rare Alamat Book of Light and thus secure a spot for himself on Chynchin’s Colloquium of scholars. However, unexpected events prevent that from happening. Fifteen Ymisen galleons arrive in the harbor to force a trade agreement on Chynchin. Veycosi tries to help, hoping to prove himself with a bold move, but quickly finds himself in way over his head.
Bad turns to worse when malign forces start stirring. Pickens (children) are disappearing and an ancient invading army, long frozen into piche (tar) statues by island witches is stirring to life—led by the fearsome demon known as the Blackheart Man. Veycosi has problems in his polyamorous personal life, too. How much trouble can a poor student take? Or cause all by himself as the line between myth and history blends in this delightfully sly tale by one of greatest novelists.

“Audiobook
The world building in this book is incredible. Not just the physical aspects, but the cultural as well. There's religion, legend, societal, family, so so unique. We get the Caribbean-coded Island nation of Chynchin with it's non capitalist society of polyamorous peoples, made of natives and descendants of previous colonizers. Like Haiti, there was a subjugated (and maybe enslaved population) that rose up a gained freedom from the nation of Ymisin. When a fleet of ships from Ymisin arrive suddenly the nation is unsure how to proceed, will it be war or subjugation again.
Our MC, Veycosi, is studying to become a scholar. We get the history of the island and the cultural takes and legends through him and his quest for knowledge. He's definitely a flawed character and we don't always like him and the choices he makes. His study of the history and legends hold the keys to the future of his people.
The audiobook is an immersive experience, read by Ron Butler, we get great accents and dialects (plus I'd have a hard time with the spelling of some of these names and words).”

“I forgot the use of Caribbean dialect in Hopkinson’s stories so it can be a bit jarring in the beginning. I’m not super familiar with Caribbean folklore so I had to use context clues and a lot of repetition to understand. Once I adjusted, everything was fine. The author doesn’t hold your hand AT ALL you have to use context clues while reading and piecing things together. There’s no info dumping which I can appreciate because they can get very annoying at times.
Very unique setting, and immersive storytelling. You’re dropped into a queer normative, polyamorous world where there’s usually a marriage of three instead of two in relationships.
This has STRONG character development. My only gripe is that the first half DRAGGED, and the chapters are EXTREMELY long they’re almost like novels within themselves.
There’s a lot of build up in the beginning but the results were worth it. The protagonist, Veycosi, was hard to love and root for, definitely a “morally gray” character.”
