Black Beauty - Unabridged

By Anna Sewell & Kevin Theis
Black Beauty - Unabridged by Anna Sewell & Kevin Theis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

"Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell - subtitled "The Autobiography of a Horse" - is one of the most beloved classics of 19th-century literature. Told from the perspective of the horse himself, the novel traces his life from a carefree colt on an English farm to the hardships he endures under various owners.

Through Beauty's eyes, readers witness both kindness and cruelty in the human world. He experiences gentle care from good masters like Farmer Grey and Squire Gordon, but also suffering under neglectful and abusive owners. Along his journey, Beauty meets other horses-such as the spirited Ginger and the loyal Merrylegs-whose stories reveal the harsh realities of animal labor in Victorian England.

Sewell's novel - the only book she would ever pen - not only tells a touching and inspiring story but also serves as a powerful call for empathy and reform in the way humans treat working animals.

"Black Beauty" has been adapted for the screen numerous times and is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

About Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was an English novelist best known for her classic work "Black Beauty," one of the most beloved animal stories ever written. Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, she suffered a severe ankle injury at age fourteen that left her permanently disabled. Dependent on horses for transportation, Sewell developed a deep compassion for them, which profoundly influenced her writing. "Black Beauty," published in 1877, was her only novel and was written during the final years of her life. Told from the perspective of a horse, the book highlights the cruelty animals endured and advocates for kindness, empathy, and humane treatment. Although Sewell did not live long enough to witness its immense success, her work transformed public attitudes toward horses and inspired animal welfare reforms. Today, Black Beauty remains a timeless tale of dignity, resilience, and compassion.
