Publisher Description

“Lovers who surmount the odds have always been intense emotional fodder, but rarely have we seen a story like Birthday...true and raw, haunting and undeniable.” —The New York Times Book Review

Two best friends. A shared birthday. Six years...

ERIC: There was the day we were born. There was the minute Morgan and I decided we were best friends for life. The years where we stuck by each other’s side—as Morgan’s mom died, as he moved across town, as I joined the football team, as my parents started fighting. But sometimes I worry that Morgan and I won’t be best friends forever. That there’ll be a day, a minute, a second, where it all falls apart and there’s no turning back the clock.

MORGAN: I know that every birthday should feel like a new beginning, but I’m trapped in this mixed-up body, in this wrong life, in Nowheresville, Tennessee, on repeat. With a dad who cares about his football team more than me, a mom I miss more than anything, and a best friend who can never know my biggest secret. Maybe one day I’ll be ready to become the person I am inside. To become her. To tell the world. To tell Eric. But when?

Six years of birthdays reveal Eric and Morgan’s destiny as they come together, drift apart, fall in love, and discover who they’re meant to be—and if they’re meant to be together. From the award-winning author of If I Was Your Girl, Meredith Russo, comes a heart-wrenching and universal story of identity, first love, and fate.

“Beautifully written, Birthday is an altogether singular contribution to the gradually growing body of transgender literature and, indeed, to mainstream literature, as well.” —ALA Booklist, starred review

Thumbs Up“This was such a lovely book. It was heartwarming and beautiful and moving. It was a pleasure to read about Morgan & Eric’s story & Morgan’s journey to becoming herself. I feel like this is the perfect lgbtq+ book for young adults and would highly recommend it. Whilst I did feel the ending was quite predictable, it was also very lovely and I’m happy it ended the way it did.”
Loudly Crying Face“this is my third or fourth time reading this book, it’s one of my favorites. it’s been a while since I read it last though and I definitely forgot some of the things I don’t like about it. the concept of only writing on their birthdays is a really cool way to tell a story over a lot of years. occasionally, there’s pieces where I would think “well that doesn’t line up”, like how they manage to have this super important football game on their birthday three years in a row. it’s small, but for some reason bugged me this read through. it really opens your eyes to the struggles of growing up lgbtq in a place that doesn’t accept you. I’m bi, but am fortunate enough to have a family that loves and accepts me, and I live in a town surrounded by queer people. this representation is incredibly important and opened my eyes to others situations. I love their characters relationships and I love how the author deals with mental health and demonstrates the spiral you can enter. the ending has always felt really rushed to me. I don’t know what it is about it, but I think it’s the evolution of Morgan and Eric’s relationship. it just bothers me a little. anyways, I know the author is problematic, but I’m going to continue reading it, I bought it before I knew 😭 if you’re on the fence about reading this book, I’d say do it! I don’t have experience as a trans person so I can’t directly speak to whether or not it’s a good representation for them, but as a queer kid with mental health issues, the author makes you feel seen.”
