Birding Without Borders
ByPublisher Description
In 2015, for 365 days, with a backpack, binoculars, and a series of one-way tickets, Noah Strycker traveled across forty-one countries and all seven continents, eventually spotting 6,042 species—by far the biggest birding year on record. This is no travelogue or glorified checklist. Noah ventures deep into a world of chronic sleep deprivation, airline snafus, breakdowns, mudslides, floods, war zones, ecologic devastation, conservation triumphs, common and iconic species, and scores of passionate bird lovers around the globe. By pursuing the freest creatures on the planet, he gains a unique perspective on the world they share with us—and offers a hopeful message that even as many birds face an uncertain future, more people than ever are working to protect them.

“I cried countless times while reading this lolllll”
“This took me so long to read because I had to keep my phone on hand to search up what all these birds look like. It sounds like an incredible trip, and I wish Strycker talked more about the highlights of the trip, rather than spending so much time discussing the travel logistics. I’ve been inspired to start a backyard list — all the species I’ve seen in my backyard. 🦉”
“"For me, finding 5000 birds was the game, but the real adventure was in the people I would meet, the places I would visit, and the stories and memories I would accumulate along the way."
As well as enjoying reading about the fascinating birds, I appreciated that the author had decided to do his birding year being guided by locals and living with locals, wherever that landed him. The trip became an immersive experience, showing the reader more of each location than could be gained by travelling on tourist guided tours.
And I always enjoy a list to tick off and celebrated with the author when he reached 5000.”
