“I loved the concept of this book. We've found a planet that's millions of years ahead of ours evolutionally. While it's never had any mass extinctions, it is hellbent on destroying us because our immune systems just can't handle the micro-organisms there, which seem to learn very quickly how to infect us. The answer? Bio-engineer humans who can withstand it. And Zoe is the first one who can go out into this new planet without full armor. There's also a population on the planet of seemingly sentient beings who know how to use fire and bury the dead, and they seem as curious about us as we are of them.
I will say that this book was more of a challenge than Wilson's other books I've read. Until the last 20% or so, it felt like every paragraph was packed full of new information, which was necessary for the world-building the author was doing. While I appreciate it as a whole, it made the book move slower than it could have. The concept and the ending were well worth it though.”
