“2.5. he certainly thinks very highly of himself”
“I had little opinion on Terry McAuliffe beyond the embarrassing performance that was the 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election, but reading his recount of one of the darkest chapters of recent US history caused me to discover a grudging respect for his candid insight. McAuliffe is unflinching in his description of the anxiety that gripped his administration in the late summer of 2017, anxiety that proved to be entirely merited. He is also frank in his condemnation of both the organisers of the Charlottesville rally, the re-emergence of public white supremacy, and the institutional racism that festers at the core of the United States. However, I have to take points away for his, like many Democrats, unwillingness to address the fact that it is the Republican Party as a whole, not just Donald Trump, who has embraced racist dogwhistle politics. This is perhaps best illustrated by the passage where he insists that the GOP was somehow ignorant of, or trying to downplay, Trump's overt racism in the lead up to the 2016 election, a perspective that I would argue is ahistorical. Regardless, I found McAuliffe's insight into the day-to-day build up to and aftermath of Charlottesville to be engaging and informative.”
