Publisher Description

Jenna Miscavige Hill, niece of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige, was raised as a Scientologist but left the controversial religion in 2005. In Beyond Belief, she shares her true story of life inside the upper ranks of the sect, details her experiences as a member Sea Org—the church's highest ministry, speaks of her "disconnection" from family outside of the organization, and tells the story of her ultimate escape.

Piercing the veil of secrecy that has long shrouded the world of Scientology, this insider reveals unprecedented firsthand knowledge of the religion, its obscure rituals, and its mysterious leader—David Miscavige. From her prolonged separation from her parents as a small child to being indoctrinated to serve the greater good of the Church, from her lack of personal freedoms to the organization's emphasis on celebrity recruitment, Jenna goes behind the scenes of Scientology's oppressive and alienating culture, detailing an environment rooted in control in which the most devoted followers often face the harshest punishments when they fall out of line. Addressing some of the Church's most notorious practices in startling detail, she also describes a childhood of isolation and neglect—a childhood that, painful as it was, prepared her for a tough life in the Church's most devoted order, the Sea Org.

Despite this hardship, it is only when her family approaches dissolution and her world begins to unravel that she is finally able to see the patterns of stifling conformity and psychological control that have ruled her life. Faced with a heartbreaking choice, she mounts a courageous escape, but not before being put through the ultimate test of family, faith, and love. At once captivating and disturbing, Beyond Belief is an eye-opening exploration of the limits of religion and the lengths to which one woman went to break free.

Surprised Face with Open Mouth““Beyond Belief” is the best way to describe my feelings on this book! I had limited and very basic knowledge of Scientology (what’s said in the mainstream, mostly, the celebs involved) but I didn’t know any of this. I feel sad for those that do not see that this “religion” is actually a massive group of individuals across the globe that condone physical abuse (even to children!) and force you to basically ignore your family unit and romantic partners, even if they are in the church. My heart goes out to Jena and all of those who grew up thinking this was normal. The punishment and torture that Jena went through as the niece of the LEADER… I can’t even imagine what the typical person goes through. Fable made me rate this book but I don’t think it’s something that should be rated, however, I will just rate it as a 3.5ish because although I learned a lot and it was extremely interesting and moving, I do wish it was a little easier to follow chronologically. This could have even been achieved with years at the start of the chapters. Either way, I hope that Jena and anyone who has escaped this cult finds peace and do not suffer for the rest of their lives haunted by the lives they lived in Scientology. I hope that people, now with the internet and information being spread much easier, see it for what it is: a money hungry cult. Unfortunately there are massive celebrities in it still (Tom Cruises basically running the thing now), Elizabeth Moss, etc., but I hope that regular people do their research before deciding this is something they want to SIGN A BILLION YEAR CONTRACT for …. (Like actually, wtf?). A personal story, that no one will probably read, though that’s related: my best friend and I were in California when we were 18 years old. We were walking down Hollywood Blvd. We were asked by someone outside a building to take a personality test. We went into this strange building and sat in these little cubicles and did this super detailed personality test. It gave both of us the heebie jeebies and we literally ran out of there. Turns out it was the recruitment center in Hollywood for Scientology!”
“Jenna Miscavige Hill delivers a powerful, eye-opening account of life inside Scientology. It's deeply informative, shedding light on a world few truly understand, told with clarity, courage, and firsthand insight.”
