Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult & Samantha van Leer digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Soon to be an off-Broadway musical!

In this delightful companion novel to Off the Page, #1 New York Times bestselling authors Jodi Picoult and her daughter and cowriter, Samantha van Leer, present the YA novel that started it all! Filled with romance, adventure, and humor, the magic jumps off the page (literally) in a story you’ll never forget.

What happens when happily ever after…isn’t?

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

A romantic and charming story, this companion novel to Off the Page will make every reader believe in the fantastical power of fairy tales.

Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“I first heard of this story through the musical that was written based on the story. I love Jodi Picoult and was excited to read this story. I think it's very sweet that she wrote it with her daughter. While the story is very typical YA fiction, it still had some surprises. The characters felt more dimensional than the usual YA fare, and I greatly appreciated the lack of love triangle. I've read some criticism of the book that Delilah is dense and acts so dumb and, it's true. She does. But she is also a teenage girl jist trying to find a place to belong. And she finds it in a book and escapes. I related to Delilah in many ways and felt her very authentic to the teenage girl existence. The child who still lives in me wanted their happily ever after to be the exact happily ever after they received (and the solution was just a tad bit obvious), but the logical adult in me dreaded that conclusion because I just couldn't imagine rooting against everyone else. Without Oliver, the story can't exist, and so everyone else would have been lost. The authors did a good job creating characters I cared about to be happy with that turn of events. Now, they did bring about the happily ever after in a way that leaves everyone happy, but how long can it last? Overall, I loved this story. It moved fast and didn't feel repetative. I cant wait to check out the perusal of the musical next!”
