“Went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how well written it is. I love the witty writing and the relationships between the characters are fantastic!”“So this was another book I was recommended many times as having Labyrinth vibes…. And in all honesty I don’t see it 🙈
That being said, I did overall enjoy this book- particularly the characters themselves.
In this book we follow Sasha in part 1 and The Shadow King in part 2. The book tells the story of Sasha getting a job as a kindergarten teacher, but after an encounter with members of the town, she starts dreaming for the first time in years, however, these dreams are a bit more real than she thought! Surrounded by witches and magic, Sasha starts to learn more about the town she’s moved to, and also her dreamworld, known as The Between. There she meets the handsome Shadow King and it turns out The Between has selected her to be Queen…
As mentioned, I thought the characters were great in this book, however, I would have enjoyed it more I think had the pacing been more balanced and the writing more specifically executed. Most chapters were extremely long, and were also lead by too much dialogue to move forward the plot very little. Moments of the plot really captured my attention but there were other times I started to feel a little bored. Part 2, from The Shadow King’s perspective did have some overlaps too where we ended up reading the same conversations again from part 1. That being said, I loved getting to see more of The Between through some sections of part 2, so while I think his POV was needed, I think it should have been written as Dual POV all the way through rather than making us read through the same timeline all over again after reaching the end once already.
At over 1000 pages I just feel like this story could have been condensed a little which would have made it better. That being said, it’s captured my attention enough to try part 2 when it comes out later this year though!”
