One evening, Mother tells Daughter a story about a tiger spirit who lived in a woman’s body. She was called Hu Gu Po, and she hungered to eat children, especially their toes. As the two young lovers translate the grandmother’s letters, Daughter begins to understand that each woman in her family embodies a myth—and that she will have to bring her family’s secrets to light in order to change their destiny.

“2 stars! I’m sorry I just didn’t get this at all - it started off a bit weird and got a whole lot weirder. So much talk of holes and bodily functions… NOT in the way you might think though.
It was definitely original… but to what end. I’m absolutely on board with a bit of wild and wacky but I didn’t feel like I was guided to the hidden meaning, if there was one. It did keep me guessing and the characters were interesting hence the 2 stars.”
“Beautifully written—clever, aching, and wonderfully blunt. Reads like a long-form poem and is better to approach it with the acceptance that narrative details won’t be laid out clearly. With vagueness comes a lovely playfulness with language. Really loved the exploration of the chosen stories, the tendencies, and the uncontrollable effects lingering from the past that can be passed down through generations.”
“This is a story of inheritance and how it can be a burden if we hide from the ugly parts of our family's past. But if we accept what has been passed down to us, we can reshape it to be our own. We can make it something that can grow.
The story is filled with imagery that is often grotesque, making even the moments that are supposed to be heartwarming tainted by bodily gore.”
“I didn’t finish this book. I really wanted to push through but the writing wasn’t really enjoyable for me. It starts off poetic, but then confuses me with its crude finish. I don’t know how to explain it, although I wish I was able to interpret it better. If you’re hesitant, borrow it from the library to give it a try.”
About K-Ming Chang
K-Ming Chang was born in the year of the tiger. She is a Kundiman Fellow and a Lambda Literary Award finalist in poetry. Her poems have been anthologized in Ink Knows No Borders, Best New Poets 2018, Bettering American Poetry Vol. 3, the 2019 Pushcart Prize Anthology, and elsewhere. Raised in California, she now lives in New York.
